Let’s discover the point of view of a young Computer Vision

it is young

Green Data

Big Data and the future

Artificial Intelligence

“The future is always young and we owe a debt to the new generations: make digital data understandable and usable.”

This is a creed that resonates strongly between the walls of Pragma Etimos. And since the future is young, we will dedicate this space to the vision on Computer Vision of a recent graduate of Sapienza University of Rome and passionate about the subject.

Her name is Chandana, 25 years old young aspirant who is born and bought up in India. She did her bachelor studies in Mechanical Engineering in India, and came a long way to pursue her masters in Aerospace engineering at Sapienza university of Rome, Italia.

Chandana-Computer Vision

Thank you Chandana for being here today. Would you like to tell us what led you to become passionate about Computer Vision?

First of all, my master’s degree is in Aerospace Engineering and I have a specialization in “Automation and Robotics” taken at Sapienza University of Rome. There I was introduced to image processing. In that particular period I turned my interest more towards Computer Vision and everything related to Artificial Intelligence. After completing my master’s degree, I focused mainly on image processing, Computer Vision techniques, Machine Learning. This is just my starting point in Computer Vision. Now I would like to direct my career in this field.

What do you think computer vision can make to a better quality of life?

Our future is mainly focused on Big Data. We have to work with Big Data because now everything is digitized. In the near future everything will be increasingly digitized.

There will be more and more images, videos and audio files. So, all we have to do is make sure that this data is usable thanks to Computer Vision. We can use Computer Vision in many sectors: aerospace, robotics, Remote sensing, travel, healthcare, etc.

So it is important for us to know how it behaves. Computer Vision is closely linked to man because with it we are able to quickly identify people, objects, nature. With computer vision we can solve real world problems like fraud detection, illegal affairs, fakes detection, adversarial attacks etc.. which will make our life much more easier and faster, I think Computer Vision will acquire an increasingly important role in the near future. In fact, we will also have to deal with augmented reality, virtual reality, the mix reality. All these are advanced technologies with which we will have to work and which are based on Computer Vision.

What do you think will be the development of the field of Computer Vision?

As I discussed before, in the near future I believe we will hear more and more about augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality which are mostly connected with Computer Vision and neural networks. Because big companies like Google, Apple have recently launched their platforms related to Augmented reality known as ARcore(by Google) and ARkit(by Apple). We have mobile augmented reality systems as well and now we can interact directly with the graphic content on mobiles. It’s an amazing experience for us. It can change the perspective of the world.

Another development which I see in the Computer Vision field is 3D and 4D reconstruction of the scenes be it static or dynamic. This area has tremendous development in the coming future. Along with these there can be many more advances in neural networks, point clouds, edge computing, biometrics, GAN’s, continual learning models etc.

What do you think of Green Data? Do you think it can also be applied in Computer Vision?

From my point of view, I understand Big Data as a source of information. However, this information comes only from structured and usable data. I mean green data as data generated using renewable energy sources. I see on your website that you work with green data, giving a somewhat different definition, so I’m curious to know more. It may be interesting to see Computer Vision techniques in a Green Data approach to make the data present in images, photos, videos available and usable.

Would you like to say something to the young students who are approaching Computer Vision for the first time?

I’m a recent graduate and I don’t have much experience to guide others but the only thing I want to recommend to students and upcoming graduates be it in data science field or any other field, everybody should have some knowledge about Computer Vision. Because most of the social media apps we have today are making use of it. Just think about Google maps, Instagram or snapchat filters, VR games, Augmented reality for E-commerce applications, Autonomous driving applications etc etc, Be curious to know how are these apps working? Backend of this applications? We can find CV applications in every app that I have mentioned above.
